How to Create the Life You Want

It’s the little things you do that can make a big difference. What are you attempting to accomplish? What little thing can you do today that will make you more effective? You are probably only one step away from greatness. ~ Bob Proctor

Most of us start a new year or a new month or a new week with grand ideas of creating a new life for ourselves. We’ll start that diet or exercise program on Monday. We’ll sign up for that new class next month. Whatever our dreams and desires, there’s always some date in the future when we’ll focus on them. After the holidays, I’ll … You know it’s true.

Why don’t we see those dreams and goals fulfilled? Because, we don’t make the effort needed to move them from dream … to hope … to reality. Today I’d like to encourage you to make your dreams come true so that you can create the life you want. Use these seven keys with dedication and eventually you will find yourself living your dream.

The first step is to open your heart and dream. Much of the world has stopped dreaming. They float (or struggle) from day to day, month to month, with no dreams or goals in mind. Yet God has promised that if you delight in Him (trusting His timing and the promises in His Word, he shall give thee the desires of thine heart (Ps. 37:4).

Those desires were placed in you by Almighty God. He knows you and your personality, your talents and abilities. After all, He made you – designed you to fulfill a specific place in the body of Christ. For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you an expected end (Jer. 29:11). Like Abraham, He wants to bless you so that you can be a blessing to those around you (Gen. 12:2; Gal. 3:9,14).

Write it down. As you dream, put your thoughts, plans and goals on paper. Habakkuk 2:2 says to write the vision, make it plain upon tables (ok, we use tablets nowadays!), that he (that’s you) may run (move forward) that reads it. Putting your thoughts on paper adds substance to your vision.

Since you’re dreaming, anything is possible. Describe your best life in vivid detail. How does it look, feel, sound, taste and smell? Involve all your physical senses to create a ‘mental movie’ of who you want to be, how you want to live and what you want to do. Imagination is powerful. Your subconscious (your connection to spiritual possibilities) will begin to develop the path to your dream if you stay focused on the result you want and work toward it.

Take your stand of faith. Find God’s promises that support your dream. The Bible contains innumerable promises for wisdom, prosperity, abundance, health, protection – whatever you need to live a full life.

  • You want to start your own business or find a new source of income – you have the mind of Christ (I Cor. 2:16) and Jesus was made unto you wisdom … (I Cor. 1:30)
  • You want to lose weight – seek His wisdom and remind yourself often that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, that you are not your own (I Cor. 6:19).
  • You want to improve your health – find any of dozens of promises for health, strength and long life. Start with Psalm 91.
  • You want a new home or car – God meets all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus (Phil. 4:19).

God promised a life that is exceeding abundantly above all that you can ask or think (Eph. 3:20) with exceeding abundant grace, full of faith and love (I Tim. 1:14). Jesus told us He came so that you would have an abundant, overflowing life (John 10:10).

Even if you don’t know exactly what you want, seek His wisdom for opportunities and favor (Ps. 5:12).  One of my favorite verses is Deut. 8:18 – But thou shalt remember the LORD thy God: for it is He that giveth thee power to get wealth … He has a plan for you (Jer. 29:11) that is far beyond your ability to dream, but if you’ll start by stepping out in faith, He will lead you into the best life ever.

Break it down. The old adage is: How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time. As you ponder your vision for the life you want, make a list of smaller steps you can work on that will move you closer to the life you want.

No matter how lofty your dreams, there are things you can do now to help you move forward. Faith requires a commitment (James 2:17). Take a class; do some research. Find a mentor, partner or coach. Work to pay off a debt so you are more stable financially. God wants you to trust Him for the outcome, but he does expect you to do what you can (Deut. 24:19; 2 Thess. 3:10).

Begin today. Procrastination is an enemy to the life you want. Tomorrow never comes. Life is a series of today’s. Today is the only thing you have to work with. Hebrews 10:38 says NOW the just shall life by faith. I John 3:2 says NOW are we the sons of God. The Bible uses the word NOW more than 1300 times. Timothy talked about the promise of the life that NOW is, and of that which is to some (4:8). God’s promises are for us NOW, not just in heaven. Psalm 23 says Thou prepares a table (abundance) before me in the presence of mine enemies … my cup runneth over (v. 5). There are no enemies in heaven; those promises are for your life here and NOW.

Expect miracles. Look for, anticipate and expect good things to happen to you and for you. God has promised favor and blessing, abundance, strength and good health. Look for them. Thank Him for them. An attitude of expectancy draws good things toward you.

Watch your thoughts and words. Negative thoughts generate negative experiences. Instead, be positive and grateful. Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer (Ps. 19:14).

Stay in love. God blesses those who follow His commandments and trust Him. Unforgiveness blocks effective prayer (Mark 11:25). Greed, temper, gossip, bitterness, covetousness and a host of other sins are your enemies. Treat them as such. Practice words and actions of love and blessing toward others until it becomes your natural response. Faith works by love (Ga. 5:6). Maintaining your love walk keeps you connected to God’s favor and blessing.

You can have the life you want if you are willing to become the person you need to be and do those things you need to do. Start now to develop those ideas in your mind, mix them with faith and effort, expecting God to amply provide His favor, blessing, grace, mercy and miracles. Watch for it! Soon, you will be living the life you always wanted.
