Seek Ye First …The Key to Blessing and Abundance

If you have not chosen the Kingdom of God first, it will in the end make no difference what you have chosen instead. ~William Law

Hubby and I have spent months looking at appliances, flooring, paint, laminate and tile for the kitchen. I needed a new dishwasher and stove; I hoped for cabinets with doors and drawers that actually close. I wanted all the rest. But I also knew Seek Ye FIRST … First, huh? How much time have I spent in the Word and in prayer? A new kitchen is my plan, but is it His?

I know from experience that God always has a better plan than my mind can conceive, so I decided to research ‘kingdom of God’ since I do want to seek Ye first. Here is one of the verses I found – and the thoughts that surfaced as I typed.

And Jesus knew their thoughts, and said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand: (Matt.12:25)

Kingdom can describe my personal domain, household, marriage or business. If I’m trying to accomplish something using both God’s rules and the world’s, it will not succeed. One will cancel and nullify the other.

This is a test, this is only a test …

I remember another time years ago when I desperately wanted new living room carpet. I was reading and meditating on various verses, including owe no man anything (Rom. 13:8). In truth, I KNEW we couldn’t buy it. We didn’t have the money. I cried for days. But that decision of obedience and honor created a breakthrough in our finances and our marriage that I could not have foreseen and would never have experienced had I made the other choice.

He changes not …

I know God intends only good for us because the Bible clearly states that God is good and He is Love. He is our spiritual Father and desires the best for His children. It also says He does not change. What He provides for anyone is available for all of us. The difference is not Him, it is us.

We need to honor His Word and be obedient to His commands in order to receive His blessing and abundance. If we study the Bible, we’ll find that the most blessed and prosperous people were those who trusted God at all times.

  • Abraham believed God, was called His friend, and was very rich
  • David was a man after God’s own heart
  • Solomon asked for wisdom rather than riches
  • Joseph ended up as the second most powerful man in Egypt, after the Pharaoh

Often, letting go of our own desires and trusting God is very hard on our thoughts and emotions. We don’t want to give up our plans, our schemes, our poor-me attitudes. Which brings us to the verse until now the kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and the violent take it by force. (Matt. 11:12)

Seek ye first …

We must be willing to fight for Godly principles, for His way of doing things – even within our own thoughts – to experience the kingdom of heaven and its benefits here on earth. If we say, “I am seeking You”, but don’t actually put Him first in the things that are important to us – our time, money, relationships – then we are deceiving ourselves.  God’s best requires us to make Him our priority.

The Bible says that if we seek God, we will find Him. Seek means to crave, pursue, or go after with all of our might. Relationships require time and attention. Are you giving that to God? Is He really first, or do we try to fit Him in after other interests and activities?

All things work together for good …

As I spent time with God each morning and evening – reading, studying, researching, praying and meditating – I was still unsure whether to proceed with the kitchen plans. But circumstances began to lead us into decisions. And one decision led to another, step by step. When we didn’t know what to do next, the perfect answers showed up.  I have a beautiful kitchen with working appliances and cabinet drawers that close. I also have stronger faith and joy each time I walk in the room because I know it was assembled by God.

If you are troubled or unsure, seek Him first. As you spend quality time with Him, you will find that ‘all these things’ – every answer you need – will be added unto you.
