The Key to a Good Life – Forget Resolutions; Remember (and Multiply) Your Blessings!

We can only be said to be alive in those moments when our hearts are conscious of our treasures. ~Thornton Wilder

In January, most people focus on the New Year and the changes we’d like to see in our lives. We talk about goals and resolutions, desires and dreams. We think about our health, our livelihood and our relationships. And we make grand plans to be better, to do better. The problem is that we forget those resolutions within days or weeks of making them.

I’d like to invite you to adopt a different attitude as you face a new year and a new season. Let’s look at what you already have, what you have already accomplished; the blessings that already exist. How can you multiply the good things in your life?

The word, BLESS, appears 463 times in the Bible, from Genesis to Revelation. Whether used as a noun, verb or adjective, it indicates God’s favor and protection. The first words God spoke to mankind were BLESSING.

And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply and replenish the earth and subdue it: and have dominion … (Gen. 1:28)

During all of creation, every time God said, “BE”, something happened. Whatever He spoke became the thing He said. And He told us, “Be fruitful and multiply.” That means we ARE full of abundance and BLESSING – because He said so! Too often, we forget that.

Note the plural word, ‘them’. That means all of us. He created every living spirit at the beginning, male and female created he them (v. 27). Then, in Chapter 2 he gave physical bodies to Adam and Eve. But that happened later – after He spoke the BLESSING over you and me!

So, what Blessings are in your life? Where are you prospering? What abundance, joy, peace, favor, protection, dominion, expansion, love, and mercy do you already enjoy? They are all part of the Blessing that God has spoken into your life.

Proverbs 10:22 proclaims that ‘The blessing of the LORD, it maketh rich, and he adds no sorrow with it.’ Notice, we don’t have to do anything. There is enough power in the BLESSING God spoke to create abundance. Goodness is fruitful. Peace multiplies. Joy abounds. You already have ‘all sufficiency in all things’ (2 Cor. 9:8).

One of the simplest and most effective ways to increase those blessings is gratitude. Recognize what you already have! Prayer isn’t always about petition. Tell God how much you appreciate the good in your life. Show your family how much you love them. Thank your friends for what they contribute to your life. Smile. Hug. Do a favor. Send a note or small gift.

Magnify your blessings with thankfulness and appreciation. The more you notice the good in your life, the more you will find.

The opposite is also true. The more you grumble and complain about your circumstances, the more you will have to grumble and complain about.

So, let’s start the New Year with a new attitude of gratitude. If you will always look for your blessings, you are guaranteed to find them. Be blessed. Be grateful. Be a blessing.
