How to Heal Mental Hangnails: Worry, Stress, Anxiety and Grief

Set peace of mind as your highest goal and organize your entire life around it. ~ Brian Tracey

Did you ever have a hangnail?

Or a stubbed toe?

All of a sudden, your entire consciousness is focused on the pain, instead of being grateful for the 99.9% of your body that is functioning entirely well.

Worry is like that. It’s a hangnail in your mind, making you forget all the blessing in your life. Instead, your entire focus is on your ‘pain’ and how to make it go away.

The problem is – you can’t “heal” worry any easier than you can heal a hangnail. I have found, though, that I can put a bandage on my finger so I don’t pick and bite at the sore spot. Then, I can purposely think about something else, and the pain will disappear into the background of my mind.

The bandage for worry (or trouble, stress, anxiety, depression and defeat) is Peace. It is the cure for all sorts of mental anguish and torment. And you can have it right now.

Peace is not a nebulous concept; it is actually a gift from God to you. Jesus said, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you …” (John 14:17)

Imagine for a moment that God placed your peace in a big box, wrapped in shiny paper and tied with a bright bow. He hands it to you like a birthday present. “Here,” He says. “I want you to have this.”

If you don’t reach out and take the package – which, by the way, also includes joy, love, goodness, kindness, and other riches – you will never ‘receive’ His gift. You have the choice to either take it and hang onto it … or refuse to receive it.

“No,” you say, “I don’t deserve it. This mess is all my fault, and I have to fix it on my own. Thanks, anyway.”

You see, in every moment of every day, you have a choice – a decision. If that bright, shiny box holds a million dollars, you’d grab it and never let go. You wouldn’t let anyone or anything take it away from you. You would defend your right to hold it, own it, and use it.

You can do the same with peace, love, joy. God will even trade you … your worries for His peace. “Cast all your cares on Him for He cares for you” (I Peter 5:7). Refuse that bag of worry, and grab the gift of peace. Say to yourself, moment by moment if necessary, “I have peace. God gave it to me, and I’m not letting go of it.”

He wants you to have it. He gave it to you to use. It’s not just a gift, either. Peace is also a spiritual weapon to help you defeat all manner of mental and emotional attacks. Grab hold and don’t let go!
