Dealing with Emotional Pain

Have you ever had life slap you in the face? More than once? In the same day?

Have you ever been severely disappointed, even devastated by circumstances beyond your control?

How did you react?

I have to tell you that all of it happened to me this week. Talk about an emotional roller coaster! And I have to tell you that it took me some time to find my inner gyroscope, the true spirit of me that knows God is always in control – no matter how out of control or unfair life seems.

I don’t want to share personal details, so let’s just say I was blindsided several times by family situations that leaped out of control and scrambled my life and my emotions like an egg.

Interestingly, a hospice counselor I talked with asked me, “Do you know how to make God laugh?” I stared at her like a doe in the headlights. She smiled and answered her own question, “Tell him your plans.” Even in the midst of intense emotional turmoil (I burst into uncontrollable tears … twice! Something I NEVER do), God was sending me messages.

A friend sent me two Bible references: “Cast all your cares on Him” … and “He has given you a spirit of power, love and a sound mind.” Mentally, I know they are Truth. Emotionally, I struggled to get above the feelings of overwhelm to the calm center of Spirit.

Later, outside a church, a sign reminded me to “keep your thoughts on things above, not things in this world.” Another one, just a mile down the road, said, “God has a good plan for your life”. And a third (this is NOT coincidence!) said, “We walk by faith, not by sight [feelings].”

When life hands us pain, disappointment and dilemas, God always reminds us to stay centered in love and faith. I’ll share more about this in my next post. In the meantime, stay in peace.
